"The Begging Bowl" is a fine art Limited Edition Print by Jane Crisp created from her original painting.

A charming piece packed with Symbolism, the begging or alms bowl (pali patta) plays an important role in the daily lives of Buddhist monks and used to receive blessings (either food or money).

It is also a historical reference to Buddha as legend tells of a woman who offered Buddha a golden bowl filled with rice as he meditated under a Bodhi Tree. She believed him to be the divinity of the tree. He divided the rice into 49 portions, one for each day until he would become enlightened. He then dropped the precious bowl into the river. This act is a reminder of non attachment to earthly matters.

Jane has incorporated this beautiful ornate begging bowl into her story using little Piwakawaka as the messenger and symbol of purity and simplicity.

Artist Bio

Jane Crisp's art is inspired by, and imbued with, her love of the natural world. Born in Auckland, the artist moved to the more rural surrounds of the Waikato in the 1990s, and the wildlife of the region has provided the ideal subjects for her skills.

Crisp, who is largely self-taught, has been painting professionally for over a decade, and has had numerous solo and joint exhibitions, and her work has garnered several awards.

"The inter-connectivity of the natural world is what captivates me. I do not paint actual scenes or situations as a photographic camera would capture, rather, I paint an exploration of metaphysical realism from my perspective, as an observer of energy and light, where I attempt to transmute the energy and invite the light out of the darkness. I play with portraiture, placing New Zealand’s native birds upon pedestals; I admire their wisdom and integrity through the legends which have been told.” – Jane Crisp
