"La Dame a la Licorne" is a large and highly detailed Fine Art Limited Edition Print by Nelson artist, Emma Moncrieff.

Her most recent ‘Dress Paintings’ are inspired by the history and intricacies of fabric design and embroidery. The ancient depiction of nature and the creatures that were admired and feared, real and imagined are reinvented by Emma. New worlds and stories come to life within the patterns of her fantastical painted dresses.

In "La Dame a la Licorne" Emma created a beautiful magical world filled with creatures, inspired by European tapestries. The Lady and the Unicorn (French: La Dame à la licorne) is the modern title given to a series of six tapestries created in the style of mille-fleurs (meaning: "thousand flowers") and woven in Flanders from wool and silk, from designs drawn in Paris around 1500.

Artist Bio

Emma Moncrieff is a self taught painter from Nelson. Her rural upbringing and an encouraging Nana, strengthened her connection, love and respect for the natural world and everything in it. She still lives rurally on a farm and her studio is nestled amongst wild flowers with views to the Ocean.

A self taught painter and sculptor, Emma has a long background in theatre and film. For a number of years she has been involved in the World Of Wearable Art Shows, from script writer and character costume designer & maker, to prop designer and make up artist.

Emma also worked as 'Creature Sculptor' for W.E.T.A workshop and spent time as a makeup artist for film. Influences of drama and theatre are visible in her paintings, especially the 'Dresses' ... At first we only see the outlines of the garments (the figures on stage), but intrigued, we are drawn into the lines and intricate patterns (the Story and characters), and upon closer inspection  it unfolds into a theatrical and unexpected world. (the creatures and mythical beings)

'In some of the dresses I create, it is as if I'm embroidering in paint and the images take form almost like hand stitching, but in stead with hundreds of tiny little brush strokes" Emma

Emma is represented by a handful of galleries and her work is collected both locally and Internationally.
