Blessing stones are handcrafted treasures made by Tanya Doty from Upper Moutere.
They are a unique gift or symbol to mark special moments in your life or those close to you, including weddings, births and birthdays. The stones are a special tribute at a funeral, christening or confirmation. They are beautiful, natural decor pieces and can be used as a physical reminder to count our blessings or to help us remember our connections to the earth and nature.
Blessing stones vary in size, from a gholf ball to the palm of your hand. We don't note the sizes as they are not valued more if they are bigger. It is the combination of shape and colour of the stone, the pattern, that makes every piece unique and people are usually drawn to a very specific piece for this reason.
Nelson based artist, Tanya Doty is passionate about the ancient craft of basket making, that extends into the weaving of Blessing Stones. She works with many different fibres and while she likes to keep it diverse, she is firmly addicted to willow. “It’s such an old craft and it’s very cool that it still has a place in modern day life. I love the smell, and the sound it makes when I’m weaving. I love that it takes strength to construct a basket and that some of the willow I use is from my own small willow bed". Tanya grows four varieties that have traditionally been cultivated for basket making.
