Artist Bio

Yolande van der Merwe (Aka Nyala NZ) is a ceramic artist based in Matamata. Originally from South Africa, Yolande grew up in the Lowveld Region, a beautiful lush and sub tropical area that proved to be very inspirational for the artist as a young creative. She trained as a potter in Nelspruit and worked in her home based studio before moving to New Zealand.

As a child she collected little treasures, like seed pods, pebbles and feathers and is still an avid collector of Nature's treasures today. Leaves and ferns in particular, are a great source of inspiration, from the intricate designs, to the actual leaf used to make imprints into the porcelain.

Yolande loves the duality of porcelain being so fragile in its soft clay stage and firing to a crisp clean white clay beautiful to behold and magical to work on.
